Cliftonville Women’s 2s travelled away to face Old Williamsonians 3s, full of confidence after last week’s victory. They carried that momentum into another strong performance, coming away with a 5–2 win.
Old Williamsonians started brightly, immediately pushing forward and creating a handful of early chances. Their pressure suggested they might take the lead, but Cliftonville’s defence stood firm.
It was the visitors who struck first in the 12th minute. A well-worked short corner ended with Chloe tapping in high at the post. After a brief pause while the umpires conferred, the goal was awarded, settling Cliftonville into their rhythm. Hannah P went close with a near miss into the top corner before doubling the lead with a crisp strike from another short corner.
With Cliftonville building momentum, it was Hannah B who added a third before half time, finishing off some excellent link-up play in the D. The visitors went into the break 3–0 up, thanks in part to some brave saves that preserved their clean sheet.
Old Williamsonians reshuffled for the second half, even pushing their goalkeeper into an outfield role, and quickly pulled one back with a rocket into the top of the net. Cliftonville responded almost immediately, Kryssi capping another sharp attacking move to restore the cushion at 4–1.
Keeper Elizabeth produced a superb stick save to deny a certain goal, but Old Williamsonians struck again on the counter, outnumbering Cliftonville’s defence to narrow the score to 4–2.
Cliftonville had the final word, however. A late short corner gave Sally the chance to step up, and her straight strike thundered home to seal a deserved 5–2 victory on the road.
Still early in the season, but Cliftonville now sit second in the league table — an encouraging sign for what’s ahead.
Player of the Match: Elizabeth, whose outstanding saves provided the platform for Cliftonville’s win.
