This week, Cliftonville Women’s 1st IX played Bromley & Beckenham Women’s 3rd IX at home. This was going to be a tough game for us as four of our strongest players were unavailable, but we took it in our stride and luckily had some brilliant up-and coming young players willing to step up.
Right from the whistle, Bromley & Beckenham put us under pressure and came out at speed. Having a lot of young players on their team they were able to outpace our midfielders who gave great chase, but were stopped from any chance of shots by Lucie & Katie in our sturdy defence.
The first half was hard fought for by both teams but we held the possession of the game, yet were unable to slip anything past their keeper. Having players out of position meant there was a lot of chat between players and a lot of on-pitch encouragement.
After a half-time talk and a quick breather, we went back on with some determination to put the game to bed. Coming out strong, our midfielders Kat and Lena had some brilliant runs from the defensive half but unfortunately weren’t able to put them away.
After a general warning about stick tackles, Maddie unfortunately pulled the short straw and was pulled up and given a green card. Just as we began to pull back into defence being a player down, one of their players was also then given a green card and the game was back on - 10 vs. 10. After a tense few minutes, both players returned to the pitch but as the game drew to a close the exhaustion set in and the formation began to fluctuate.
The final whistle brought the game to a close with a 0-0 result. Woman of the Match goes to Arabella for stepping up and being a sturdy defender for her debut for the team, and DOD went to Bella for being on a mushroom course instead of on the pitch.
