Cliftonville Men’s 1s hosted Canterbury in a top‑of‑the‑table showdown, a fixture that always promised to be tight and it delivered exactly that. Ville carved out the better chances throughout the afternoon, but a lack of clinical finishing would ultimately come back to haunt them.

The first half was cagey but edged by Cliftonville, who repeatedly found pockets of space and created openings that should have put them firmly in control. Instead, they went into the break with only a single goal to show for it, the goal coming from Alex Cowells quickly taken strike after a breakdown from a short corner pounced on and buried to give Ville a 1–0 lead. A deserved advantage, but the missed chances lingered.

The second half followed a similar pattern: tight, tense, but with Cliftonville again generating the clearer opportunities. And again, the finishing touch deserted them. Canterbury eventually punished the wastefulness, levelling the score and shifting the momentum.

But Ville hit back. In a moment of déjà vu, Cowelly stepped up at a short corner and produced a sharp flick that flew just over the back board, a brilliant finish to restore the lead. Moments later, he nearly created a goal‑of‑the‑season contender: picking up the ball on the left and crashing a 40‑yard diagonal through the defence for Dan Vinson, who launched himself full stretch to steer it goalward, only to see it clip the sideboard instead of the net.

That missed chance proved costly. Canterbury struck again later in the half, levelling the match for a second time, and despite Cliftonville’s efforts, the winner wouldn’t come. The final whistle confirmed a 2–2 draw. A result that keeps Ville top of the league, but only on goal difference, and with a sense of frustration that they couldn’t turn dominance into a three‑point cushion.

A tight contest, moments of real quality, but ultimately a reminder that missed chances at the top end of the table rarely go unpunished.

MOM- Alex Cowell.

DOD- Harry Harrison.
