After last week's game contested in 17 degree heat, normal service was resumed today and we were back to almost freezing conditions.
Coming off the back of our first win of 2025 we were keen to press on and try and finish the season strong with our new look formation. Today we faced a Holcombe team who sat a few places above us in the league and who beat us earlier on in the season in the reverse fixture at their place.
Ville started the game very strong and found ourselves 1-0 up within the first ten minutes. From a Holcombe 16 they transferred the ball out wide only to pass it back to their centre back, Sidders pressed their defender won the ball back and neatly finished past their keeper to take the lead for the home side.
Ville continued to have the upper edge for the remainder of the half and went in 1-0 up. Unfortunately during the 1st half Mr Westby managed to strain his back attempting a long ball and was unable to return to the fold. However he was able to manage the team from the side controlling the subs and dishing out the instructions. A very positive 1st half performance from the Ville, which we had seen last week too. The challenge this week was to replicate that in the 2nd half which we struggled to do last week.
Ville continued to play some lovely hockey and managed to keep Holcombe at bay. Hughes made a couple of good saves for us, Dave W made a crucial last ditch challenge and Seb transferred the ball across the back superbly all afternoon.
The game finished 1-0 to Cliftonville. Another great performance with everyone putting in a big shift to secure the win for us. The new formation seems to be working well with back to back victories in the bank as we head off to Blackheath next Saturday, can we make it 3 on the trot?
